【Product Description】 Published twice a year—in summer and winter—this series spotlights various historical events and incidents spanning Japanese and Western history, from ancient times to the early modern era.
The arrival of the "Black Ships" in 1853 prompted the Tokugawa Shogunate to abandon its long-standing policy of national isolation and open the country to the world. Perceived as a sign of weakness, this move sparked the *jōi* ("expel the barbarians") movement across the nation; meanwhile, friction with domains critical of the Shogunate's administration eventually evolved into a movement to overthrow the regime.
Amidst this turmoil, the concept of *kōgi seitai-ron*—advocating for reform through the adoption of parliamentary politics—gained traction. The Shogunate attempted to preserve the Tokugawa family's political influence by spearheading a transition to a parliamentary system involving the feudal lords.
Conversely, domains such as Chōshū and Satsuma sought to establish a new political order by overthrowing the Shogunate through military force. Yet, within these factions, there were also those who racked their brains to find ways to avert catastrophic social upheaval.
As these conflicting agendas intersected, the hands of the clock ticked inexorably toward the "Restoration of Imperial Rule."
In the card game "Osei Fukko: Bakumatsu Card Game" numerous figures who played pivotal roles in the turbulence of the era make an appearance. Players shape the course of history by taking the side of either the Shogunate—seeking to maintain Tokugawa influence—or the anti-Shogunate faction, which aims to overturn the existing order.
The game was designed by Wataru Horiba—creator of numerous historical titles such as *The Death Struggle of the Kawaguchi Detachment* and *Fierce Battle at Solomon*—who has successfully distilled complex alliances, rivalries, and victory conditions into an engaging, playable card game.
By covering key events and brilliantly visualizing their impact and significance, the game offers an experience that allows everyone—from history buffs to those less familiar with the period—to appreciate the depth and intrigue of history. Of course, the game doesn't necessarily follow the actual course of history; it is designed to be enjoyed repeatedly, allowing players to shape the outcome and decide which figures take center stage based on their own strategies.
Characters Takechi Hanpeita and Sakamoto Ryoma from Kuroe's work *Samurai Sensei* also make an appearance.
Inside, the magazine features designer notes, a replay, a play guide, character profiles, and introductions to other Bakumatsu-themed games-.
