【Product Description】 The enclosed game in this issue, "Hideyoshi Brothers! Gaiden", uses the acclaimed Yukimura Gaiden system to recreate two pivotal battles of the Sengoku period: the Battle of Yamazaki and the Battle of Shizugatake.
In both scenarios, reinforcements arrive randomly, and the appearance of the supreme commander, Toyotomi Hideyoshi, can dramatically alter the course of the battle. As a result, every playthrough offers a tense and unpredictable experience.
The game also includes several "what-if" scenarios featuring additional forces such as Hosokawa Fujitaka and Tsutsui Junkei at Yamazaki, and Sassa Narimasa at Shizugatake. Will Hideyoshi arrive in time to influence the outcome? Can his younger brother Hideyoshi's deputy, Hidenaga, hold the front until Hideyoshi appears on the battlefield? Can the Hideyoshi brothers survive both Yamazaki and Shizugatake and continue their path toward unifying Japan?
Battle of Yamazaki
The battle begins with advance forces from both sides clashing in the mountainous terrain of Mt. Tennozan and the narrow approaches around Yamazaki. As the battle progresses, Akechi reserves and Hashiba reinforcements enter the field, steadily expanding the scope of the conflict.
The Akechi forces rely on powerful arquebus units to support the front lines while coordinating cavalry and spear units held in reserve for counterattacks against enemy breakthroughs. Effective combined-arms tactics are essential.
The Hashiba player, on the other hand, faces the difficult challenge of determining where and in what strength newly arriving reinforcements should be committed.
Battle of Shizugatake
During the early stages of the battle, the individually stronger Shibata forces launch an overwhelming offensive. However, as increasing numbers of Hashiba reinforcements arrive during the mid-game, the attack gradually loses momentum.
Eventually, the appearance of famous commanders such as Kato Kiyomasa and Fukushima Masanori, representing the celebrated "Seven Spears of Shizugatake," shifts the initiative to the Hashiba side, which begins to push back the attackers.
One of the scenario's distinctive rules concerns control of key VP hexes (strategic positions) such as Oiwasan, Iwasakiyama, Dokiyama, and Shinmeiyama. If the Shibata side controls 11 of these hexes, it wins immediately through sudden death.
However, when Hideyoshi arrives, if the Shibata side controls fewer than 10 VP hexes, it must undergo a Defection Check, potentially causing commanders such as Maeda Toshiie, Kanamori Nagachika, and Fuwa Mitsuharu to defect.
Conversely, if the Shibata side controls 10 or more VP hexes, the Hashiba side must instead make a Defection Check, risking the loss of commanders such as Nakagawa Kiyohide, Takayama Ukon, and Ogawa Suketada.
This creates a dramatic struggle in which the Shibata forces desperately attempt to seize as much territory as possible before Hideyoshi's arrival, while the Hashiba forces fight to hold out until their leader reaches the battlefield.
