[Product Description] This issue's bonus game, "Mukden," is one of the titles included in "Modern Battles," a quadrilateral game about modern warfare released by SPI in 1975.
After World War II, the Soviet Union and China had been in step with each other as Eastern Bloc nations, but in 1956, General Secretary Nikita Khrushchev criticized Stalin and adopted a peaceful course, causing unrest among the Eastern Bloc.
As a result, strained relations between the Soviet Union and China, ranging from ideology to military and political issues, began to surface between the two countries by 1960. This conflict was known at the time as the "Sino-Soviet Conflict." What would have happened if the rivalry between the two great powers of the Eastern Bloc had continued to escalate and led to military conflict? One answer to this question lies in "Mukden."
This is a competitive wargame that simulates a fictional battlefield in which Soviet and Chinese forces clashed around the important city of Mukden (present-day Shenyang) during the Sino-Soviet conflict.
Due to its importance as a concentration of industry and a strategic transportation hub, Mukden would likely have been a key target in the event of military conflict between the two countries.
This game includes three scenarios with different settings. The first, "Battle for Asia," recreates a decisive battle between the main forces of both countries in this region.
The second, "Siege of Mukden," is a scenario in which Soviet forces controlling Shenyang fight mainly in the city, while the third, "Guerrilla Clearance Operation," depicts how Chinese guerrilla forces would resist Soviet forces that controlled the Shenyang area.
This magazine's articles cover the Sino-Soviet War as seen in wargames, a tutorial report for "Mukden," the Chinese military as seen in Modern War #42 "The Dragon That Engulfed the Sun" and Modern War #45 "The Dragon & The Hermit Kingdom: The Second Korean War," additional scenarios for "Decisive Battle Combined Fleet Kai," and various other serials.
